The “Don’ts” for Passengers and Columbia, MD DUIs
If you’re riding shotgun and your driver is pulled over for drunk driving, you may be wondering what you should do. Fortunately, passengers can’t receive Columbia, MD DUIs, as they aren’t driving. However, you should avoid a few behaviors if you don’t want to receive other types of charges.
Avoid Rude Behavior
Arguing with the Maryland police officer if you are pulled over will only likely end in disaster. The best manner in which to act is to simply avoid saying much. You should certainly answer any questions the officer has, but don’t do so in a rude way. If you do, you could receive other charges that can put you in jail.
Don’t Get Out of the Vehicle
If you are intoxicated and in the passenger seat, you may not be thinking clearly. Perhaps you believe that getting out of the vehicle and having a discussion with the officer could help out the driver. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be any further from the truth. You will likely find yourself in jail. Stay in the vehicle during the driver’s Howard County DWI and you may stay in good standing with the officer.
Avoid Switching Places
Some passengers and drivers believe that switching places when pulled over will prevent the driver from getting in trouble for driving under the influence in Maryland. However, this is usually not the case. Even if the passenger has only been drinking a small amount, he could still receive a Columbia DUI. Additionally, you could receive other charges for trying to deceive the officer. Stay put in your seat and you may avoiding getting in trouble with the law.
Drivers who have received Columbia, MD DUIs need the help of experienced and compassionate lawyers to help them with their cases. If not, they could receive harsher charges and rulings than necessary.
